Sleeping Bag Liners
What is the sleeping bag liner?
A small, lightweight cloth sack called a sleeping bag liner is designed to be folded inside a sleeping bag. It boosts the thermal efficiency of your sleeping bag by keeping it clean and free of body oils. Keep in mind that body oils decrease a sleeping bag’s loft and warmth.
A sleeping bag liner is often used with a quilt because it makes this minimal sleeping setup more pleasant. A quilt is a very light, zipperless sleeping bag that puts your back in direct touch with the sleeping pad. Another benefit is that you can wash your sleeping bag less frequently, increasing its life and slowing down the degradation of the insulation.
Depending on the material, a sleeping bag liner may help your sleeping bag stay warmer. Fleece sleeping bag liners are thermally inefficient (very heavy for the increased warmth), thus it’s better to wear a fleece jacket and pants at night. You’ll be more comfy sleeping in insulated pants and a jacket if you have synthetic insulation.
We limited this selection to silk and synthetic liners for the reasons mentioned above. These are very lightweight and small but offer very little warmth. They are also wicking, quick-drying, and breathable.
Your next-to-skin layer should be a sleeping bag liner. This crucial layer may wick moisture, add warmth, and keep your sleeping bag clean whether you choose a cotton, silk, or fleece option.
Though sleeping bag liners may not be the most beautiful gear, they serve a significant function in both colder and warmer climates. Many experienced travelers would just never consider traveling without one.
A quality sleeping bag liner can offer an extra layer of warmth to a sleeping bag or a bed’s blankets in cold areas, making it worth its (very little) weight in gold.
What is the point of a sleeping bag liner?
Is it worth getting a sleeping bag liner?
One of the most underrated pieces of equipment is the sleeping bag liner. The majority of hikers don’t even bother to add this extra layer to their sleeping system, yet a proper liner gives your bag extra insulation and warmth while acting as a barrier between your dirty body and the difficult-to-clean synthetic interior of your bag.
What is a sleeping bag liners used for?
Sleeping bag liners are thin cloth sacks that are typically zipped inside sleeping bags to add added comfort, insulation, and cleanliness.
What is the best type of sleeping bag liners?
Types of the sleeping bag liner
Silk
This is the best option if you’re serious about your sleeping bag liner and don’t mind spending a bit more to obtain the best. Silk can weigh as little as 200g, packs down to an incredibly small size (a tennis ball is a suitable comparison), and feels oh-so-wonderful against the skin. It also requires very little washing.
Cotton and polycotton
Although the more economical way, cotton, and polycotton liners usually have a very cozy, comfortable feel and can even increase the warmth of your sleeping bag by one or two degrees over silk options.
Why do you need a sleeping bag liner?
Ever felt a little let down that even at 45 degrees, your 40-degree sleeping bag starts to feel a little chilly? Or that after spending a few nights in the wild, it appears to have picked up scents that your sick nostrils had never noticed before? A sleeping bag liner will be a welcome and valuable addition to your gear if that is the case, or even if you simply want a little extra comfort while getting your beauty sleep.
Yes, all of the above problems could be easily avoided for a few extra hundred grams of weight and a size akin to a pair of socks. As follows:
Warmth
Sleeping bag liners act similarly to your clothing layering system by adding a barrier between your body and the outside air, resulting in a layer or pockets of warm air on either side. This could raise your sleeping bag’s low-temperature rating by up to 5 degrees.
Hygiene
Sometimes, we nature lovers might be a little careless with our hygiene. Even if we’re extra careful to keep our bodies clean when we’re outside, sleeping bags have a great focus and absorb odor unlike any other material in existence. By supplying a washable “barrier” to address this issue, liners can also increase the lifespan of your sleeping bag by minimizing washing and protecting the materials from, well, you!
Coolness
Your liner can provide you with the added warmth and comfort you need to get in some cozy kip if you chance to be summer camping and the evening temperatures are just a little too toasty for your sleeping bag but just a little too cool for sleeping outside.
Protection
Likely, the mountain huts you’ll be sleeping in when hiking in the Alps or elsewhere in Europe will need you to have a sleeping bag liner. We’re confident that after you see your bed for the night, you’ll appreciate their effort. You won’t have to deal with that decade’s collected filth and “musk” if you have a liner.

What to look for When Buying a Sleeping Bag Liner?
01Weight
Whichever sleeping bag liner you select, it probably won’t add the weight of your pack by more than a few hundred grams. With that said, every little bit helps, so it would be ideal if you could lose a few grams. Make sure to confirm that the extra grams haven’t been removed at the expense of length or other features if the liner you’re considering purchasing is very light.
02Shape
To meet the needs of any adventurer, sleeping bag liners are offered in a variety of sizes and shapes:
Standard: Mummy liners are square-shaped with less space for your feet.
Long: Same to above but adapted for taller men
Mummy: These liners are very snug and provide a better fit for sleeping bags built in the mummy form. They are wider at the shoulders and narrower at the feet. For an added layer of cocoon-like comfort, several models have included hoods.
Version with double the width: prescribed for people who like to travel in pairs or have a claustrophobic personality.
Traveler: Usually rectangular, somewhat longer than regular liners, and fitted with a built-in pillow extension if you find yourself in a hut, hostel, bothy, or hotel where concern for hygiene is not especially apparent.
Size:
Some sleeping bag liners are available in a range of lengths, hardly ever in width, that differ. Measure the size based on the height of your body.
03Convenience
This is all about machine-washability. While silk liners are usually hands-down winners in terms of quality and packability, to keep them in good nick you’ll have to wash them by hand. Polycotton and microfiber liners, however, can all be chucked into the machine with the rest of your gear
4Value for money
Having already spent a large amount on your sleeping bag, you want to ensure that it is lined with materials that will provide the most value for the money. If a liner is expensive, make sure it is high-quality and has the support of happy customers in user reviews.
